Officially inaugurated on International Museums Day 2022, Cora Cora Maldives’ Dutch Onion Museum and Outdoor Heritage Site presents guests with the unique opportunity to discover the hidden history of Maldives. Travel Trends predicted for 2023 are that guests will seek a dose of a culture different from their own and at the Dutch Onion, curiosity will be sparked throughout the museum and outdoor heritage site, particularly by the two Dutch Onion bottles in which the museum is named after, which date back to 1675 – 1690.
According to Booking.com, nearly half of travellers in 2023 will be seeking far-flung, adventurous trips with completely different cultural experiences, and the Dutch Onion Museum and Outdoor Heritage Site is the ideal place to explore the rich culture of the destination. As the only licensed museum at a resort in the Maldives, the second in the whole destination after the National Museum in Malé, the Dutch Onion Museum and Outdoor Heritage Site takes guests on a guided tour through the centuries.
The two Dutch Onion bottles were discovered in 2013, buried just above the water table in Maamigili in the Raa Atoll, and were the inspiration for the luxurious resort’s museum name. Maldives has been a seafaring community for centuries and the Dutch Onion bottles once belonged to sailors from the Dutch East India Company who filled them with liquor, cider, or wine. Originally made of thick green glass and sand rich in iron oxide, the onion-shaped bottles were buried for 100s of years meaning the exterior has been corroded away and has merged with the sand, but the rest of the bottle has been perfectly preserved.
With over 1000 local artefacts, two 12th-century temple tanks, a mosque fountain, and a traditional 1900s Maldivian house, guests can experience an interactive journey through time and explore the rich history of the Maldives.
