BLUE SAFARI SEYCHELLES CHAMPIONS RENEWABLE ENERGY IN THE SEYCHELLES OUTER ISLANDS WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF TWO NEW SOLAR POWER FARMS ON FARQUHAR AND ASTOVE

Jun 9, 2021

Blue Safari Seychelles, the experiential led travel company operating in the Outer Islands of the Seychelles, is committed to the protection and preservation of the eco-systems and environments of these remote islands and atolls. Blue Safari Seychelles, together with the Islands Development Company (IDC) is delighted to announce the installation of two new solar power plants on the islands of Farquhar and Astove, becoming the largest supplier of renewable energy in the Outer Islands of the Seychelles. The construction of the solar farms on the islands of Farquhar and Astove have eliminated the transportation of diesel from Mahè to these remote islands for electricity purposes.

Blue Safari Seychelles has always been at the forefront of sustainability and In 2018, earned the ecological title of becoming the first hospitality group in the Outer Islands to rely on solar power following the construction of a solar farm comprising of 2,200 panels by IDC on Alphonse Island. The erection of this led to the elimination of 268 000 litres of diesel usage a year, reducing emissions by 718.24 tonnes per annum – figures that will continue to increase as Farquhar and Astove adopt renewable energy.

The solar power plant facility at Farquhar Island consists of 510 panels, capable of delivering 250 kWp. This is enough to produce 94% of the electricity needs of the entire island. The installation on Astove Island will generate 150 kWp through 342 solar panels, supplying electricity to 93% of the energy demand on the entire island. Backup generators may be used on select occasions when there’s continuous rain and cloud. However, the Outer Islands are blessed with a tropical sunny climate with a year-round temperature of 28°C, so there is minimal cause for this, resulting in greater energy yields.

“Our commitment to the protection of the environment and our conservation practices are at the core of all we do. We’ve been implementing many environmentally responsible procedures across the Blue Safari Seychelles portfolio and we are excited to take the next step in developing our renewable energy sources. Alphonse Island was the first commercially operated destination in the Outer Islands to use solar power. Our dedication to this project demonstrates that Blue Safari Seychelles is leading the way in ecotourism. We hope to encourage other islands to do the same and reduce Seychelles’ dependence on diesel fuel!” Explains Keith Rose-Innes, Managing Director of Blue Safari Seychelles.

Blue Safari Seychelles comprises the islands and atolls of Astove, Farquhar, Cosmoledo, Poivre, and Alphonse. Blue Safari Seychelles has a strong environmental ethos, and the company has been established to help conserve these rare islands and atolls through sensitively designed tourism projects. Blue Safari Seychelles and its staff are committed to a wide range of projects, including the restoration of the islands’ natural vegetation, protection of Aldabra Giant Tortoises, monitoring of coral reefs, carefully controlled sustainable fishing practices, and monitoring and identification of birds, mammals and fish populations with the guidance of our on-island conservation partners ICS.
